India vs South Africa 3rd Test Day 4 Highlights: SA win by 7 wickets, seal series 2-1 – The Indian Express

India vs South Africa 3rd Test Highlights: South Africa beat India by seven wickets in the third and final Test at Cape Town to clinch three-match series 2-1. With an easy target of 212 to chase, South Africa began the fourth day at 101 for 2 after captain Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen put on a 78-run stand. But Elgar was out with what proved to be the last ball of the day with a strangle down the leg side as he edged seamer Jasprit Bumrah to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. India were earlier furious when Elgar earned a reprieve from the ball-tracking technology when on 22. India batted first and made 223, South Africa replied with 210 and India made 198 in its second innings.
Resuming the day 101/2 , South Africa go the job done in 63.3 overs with major contributions coming from Keegan Petersen (82), Rassie van der Dussen (41 not out) and Temba Bavuma (32 not out). Petersen was the only one dismissed on the day as he played one on to his stumps off Shardul Thakur.

” It hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s a mixed bag to be honest. Happy, emotional. I was trying to be positive and then build on that. It’s been difficult conditions all around and was just sticking to my guns. It’s been a long journey, can’t tell the whole story now, won’t be over till tomorrow morning.”
“Really proud. We were thrown under the sword quite a few times this series and the guys responded brilliantly. Obviously, to bounce back after losing the first game, to believe that we could still win. Extremely happy. Helps to have a group that doesn’t have any real big names, they like to rally together and play as one. And that’s crucial. Extremely proud of this group of players that we have here. Ultimately, if you want to operate at our performance levels, you need tough chats and I’m a bit of old-school mentality with a new-school twist. I laid a few challenges, even to some of the senior players as well. It was great to see the guys take my message on board.”
“I think it’s a great spectacle of Test cricket for all to see. We played well in the first game to win but South Africa bounced back well in the second and carried on the momentum in the third as well. There was some lapse of concentration from us as well in key moments. I thought South Africa performed better in those key moments and totally deserved the win.”
Temba Bavuma hits one over the infield and that’s the victory for South Africa. For India, the final frontier remains unconquered. South Africa come back from the heartbreak at Centurion to win the series 2-1

FOUR!  Hammered down the ground by Bavuma. Kohli has the field up and Bavuma accepts the invitation. Sees some flight on offer, shuffles inside the line and nails the hard sweep through square leg. Just a matter of time now. SA: 200/3 after 62 overs
The players are back for the second and what could be the final session of the match and the series Ashwin bowls the first over with Van der Dussen on strike. Van der Dussen stats confidently after lunch with a sweep off Ashwin, moving to 28. SA are 177/3 after 56 overs.
Huge appeal for LBW. Shardul trapped van der Dussen in front. The on-field umpire called it not out and it was umpire’s call on review. SA are 170/3, 42 to win. And that’s LUNCH on Day 4. India managed to just take one wicket in the first session. Shardul removed Petersen but van der Dussen & Bavuma keep the Proteas on track.
Two boundaries by Bavuma in an over strengthens South African’s bid to target further. Bavuma & van der Dussen have ridden South Africa out the trouble, reducing the runs needed to win match and series to less than 50. SA are 166/3 after 52 overs.
Lord Shardul does it again for the Indian team as he dismisses Keegan Petersen. South Africa still have to make 57 runs to win the game.  SA are 155/3 after 46.3 overs.
    Breakthrough!

It is a thick edge that runs away through the third slip for a boundary. Petersen stays back at the crease and defends with the soft hands. SA are 154/2 after 44 overs.
Time for drinks. Rassie van der Dussen and Keegan Petersen are on the crease and South Africa need just 64 runs to win the game. SA are 148/2 after 43 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled a ripper of a ball that finds the edge of Keegan Petersen on 59. But, Cheteshwar Pujara drops a sitter at first slip. India in complete danger now, desperate for a breakthrough before Lunch. SA are 129/2 after 40 overs.
    Ohhhh sugar…. 🤦
Cheteshwar Pujara has comfortably dropped the series. #SAvIND
Caught behind appeal sent upstairs by India, but the umpire rules the spike was from the bat hitting the ground. There was a spike but the third umpire deems that it was from the bat hitting the ground. Words exchanged once again after the call. SA are 120/2 after 37 overs.
Virat Kohli: ‘There you go, there is another spike there…’ pointing to the second spike as the ball passes the bat… A few words for Dussen from Virat: ‘You going after someone who is five years younger than you….’

FOUR! Wide and full from Shami and van der Dussen crunches it through covers. SA are 120/2 after 35 overs, are chasing 212 for victory.
Keegan Petersen brings up another half-century in the Cape Town Test, his third of the series. What a run the South African No 3 is having! SA are 103/2 after 31 overs.

Virat Kohli’s outburst against a controversial DRS decision during the third Test against South Africa was “immature” and with such “exaggerated” reaction, the India skipper will never be a role model to youngsters, feels former opener Gautam Gambhir. Kohli, his deputy KL Rahul and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made some unsavoury comments about umpiring and technology in stump mic after rival skipper Dean Elgar got a massive reprieve due to a contentious DRS decision in the last hour on day 3. After South African captain Dean Elgar survived an LBW decision on Day 3 of the third Test in Cape Town, members of the Indian team vented their ire on field. Meanwhile, cricket experts and former players drew comparisons of the incident to a similar one in 2011 World Cup involving Sachin Tendulkar. With the Test and the series slipping out of their hands towards the end of Day 3 at Newlands and the Decision Review System overturning spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s confident LBW appeal against South African skipper Dean Elgar, Indian players used the stump microphone to air their displeasure against the host broadcasters. For some time, the bowlers lost focus before getting Elgar at the fag end of the day. Even the umpire expressed his shock and was heard saying “that is impossible,” on the stump mic. Moments later Ravi Ashwin said: “You should find better ways to win Supersport.” After that, KL Rahul was heard saying: “Whole country playing against XI guys.” Another one chimed in to say, “broadcasters are here to make money boys”. A few resemblances are hard to ignore as this hard-fought Test series goes into its deciding day. Four years ago at Newlands, India were set a target of 208 by South Africa. Four years later at the same venue, India set a target of 212 for South Africa. The hosts had gone on to win that match by a comfortable margin of 72 runs. That may well have served as motivation for India at the start of the chase on Thursday, but as South Africa closed Day Three on 101/2, that kind of victory margin — if not perhaps the victory itself — is out of the question now.
